South West First Ladies meet at Ekiti to discuss ways to end Female Genital Mutilation
The Wife of the Ekiti State Governor, Mrs Feyisetan Fayose will today in the state’s capital, Ado Ekiti host critical stakeholders, together with three other south west first ladies: are Florence Ajimobi(Oyo) Sherifat Aregbesola(Osun) and Olukemi Mimiko from(Ondo) to plan the eradication of female genital mutilation practice in the zone.
In a press statement signed by Mr Gbenga Ariyibi, Special Assistant (Media) to the wife of the Ekiti State Governor, Mrs Fayose yesterday, it is stated that Ariyibi is cooperating with the United Nations Population Fund, UNPF, to organize the programme.
Ekiti State is ranked second with 71.2% on the prevalence scale for female genital mutilation, even though there is a general consensus that the long standing practice is harmful and need to be abandoned but Mrs Fayose believes it remains a major practice with the practitioners hiding under religious and cultural myths on the benefit of the practice.
“This age long practice is unacceptable and it should be discouraged, hence the need to advocate for its total elimination in the state. ’’It is revealed from the available data from UNFPA-UNICEF that Nigeria has the highest number of women and girls who have undergone female genital mutilation after Egypt and Ethiopia.” Mrs. Fayose said
Ekiti state governor, Mr Peter Ayodele Fayose alongside traditional rulers, federal and state legislators, the judiciary, religious leaders, traditional birth attendants and other critical stakeholders are expected to be present at the meeting which holds tomorrow.
